SMIT Help Information for SMIT
Note: The information contained in this article is structured as help information for the System Management Interface Tool (SMIT) and is not intended for use as a procedural or conceptual article.
Software Installation & Maintenance
When you are in the Installation and Maintenance menu, you can:
- Install and Update Software - Install new optional software or updates to existing software.
- Maintain Installed Software - List installed software, commit or reject applied software updates, remove or verify software products, and clean up after an interrupted installation.
- Network Install Management - Configure the NIM (Network Install Management) client package, manage push permissions, manage resource allocation, and perform a network install.
Software License Management
When you are in the Software License Management menu, you can:
- Manage Nodelocked Licenses - Allows the user to add, delete, and display nodelocked licenses on a system.
- Manage License Servers and License Databases - Adds, deletes, and changes licenses, vendors, and products on iFOR/LS license server databases.
- Show Available License Servers - Executes the iFOR/LS test and verification tool.
- Show License Usage On Servers - Displays information about various license servers and their vendors, products, and licenses.
- Show Target ID - Shows the target ID of the current machine. This information is needed when ordering nodelocked licenses.
Devices
When you are in the Devices menu, you can:
- Install or configure devices added after IPL.
- Remove devices.
- List existing devices.
- Change or show the characteristics of devices.
- Perform problem determination on devices.
System Storage Management (Physical & Logical Storage)
When you are in the System Storage Management (Physical & Logical Storage) menu, you can:
- Logical Volume Manager - List, add, remove, and perform other management tasks on logical volumes, physical volumes and paging space.
- File Systems - Add, change, remove and list journaled file system (JFS), CD-ROM file systems and Network file systems (NFS). You can also mount and unmount file systems, back up, restore, and verify file systems.
- Files & Directories - Back up files and directories to an archive, and restore or list contents of an archive.
- System Backup Manager - Create a backup image of the operating system, list files in a system image backup, and restore individual files from a system image backup.
Note: SMIT will not unmount the /usr/lpp/info/$LANG directory, on which SMIT helps are located. Typically, this directory is the CD-ROM
Security & Users
When you are in the Security & Users menu, you can:
- Users - Add and remove users, or list or change characteristics of a user.
- Groups - Add and remove groups, or list or change characteristics of a group.
- Passwords - Manage passwords for users.
- Login Control - Set login restrictions for users or ports.
You can add or remove users or groups. You can list or change characteristics of a user or of groups. You can also manage passwords for users and groups.
Communications Applications and Services
You can perform configuration and other management tasks for NFS, SNA, TCP/IP, and other communications applications that you have installed on your system.

Spooler (Print Jobs)
A spooler is a synonym for the queuing system which pertains to its use for queuing print jobs.You can start, cancel, prioritize, or show the status of print jobs. You can start and stop queues and add, list, or change characteristics of queues or queue devices.
You can start, cancel, prioritize, hold or release, move, or show the status of print jobs.
You can add or remove, start or stop, list and show status of print queues. You can change or show the characteristics of print queues.
You can also:
- Set the system's default print queue
- Change a printer's connection characteristics
- Configure this machine as a print server.
Problem Determination
You can work with the dump, trace, error log, and hardware diagnostics service tools.
Performance & Resource Scheduling
You can set the system run level, report system activity, or schedule jobs.
System Environments
You can stop the system, set the time or date, assign the primary screen (the console), change the language environment, and broadcast messages to users.
Processes & Subsystems
You can list, start, stop, and query subsystems. You can also show or remove processes.
Applications
Additional application software can be installed in this section of SMIT.
Show Lock Statistics
Generates a report for each kernel lock which meets the given (or default) conditions.
Bind a Process to a Processor
Forces a given process to run only on a given processor.
Unbind a Process
Unbinds a previously bound process, allowing it to run on any processor.
Power off a Disk
Turn off a disk.
Power on a Disk
Turn on a disk.
